The Connection Cavesson
Custom, Convertible, Handmade
for Equine Comfort and Clarity
-
Academic Cavesson
The academic cavesson features a central ring that enables you to work on a single rein or lunge line off the horse’s nose. The side rings on the nose are perfect for maintaining a biomechanically beneficial connection while transitioning to 2 rein in hand work and riding.
-
Promotes Correct Lateral Flexion
Connecting to the nasal bone (as opposed to the lower jaw, in the case of a halter) gives the trainer a direct connection to the horse’s spine through the rein, encouraging correct rotation of the spine.
-
Our buckle and strap placement is thoughtfully designed to avoid pressure points on your horse’s head and the temporomandibular joint. The jowl strap is positioned to ensure the cavesson never shifts near your horse’s eye while working off of the central ring.
-
Bit Attachments
The Connection Cavesson comes with adjustable, low-profile bit attachments so that your horse has the opportunity to learn to carry the bit before you ever begin training off of it. The combination of cavesson rings and the bit enables the trainer to seemlesly shift from bitless to bitted connection for optimal clarity and relaxation as the horse transitions to bitted work.
-
Our bit attachments hang higher on the cheeks than conventional ones, allowing the horse more freedom to position the bit in their mouth for optimal comfort. The higher attachment also enhances light signaling on the bit for improved feel and clarity between horse and human whether you’re on the ground or in the saddle.
-
Bitted and Bitless Double Bridle
Our design allows for multiple rein attachment options. With one pair of reins on the bit and the other on the nose or side-guide rings, you can gradually transition your horse from bitless to bitted or vice versa. The trainer has multiple avenues of communication with the horse to best ensure clarity and relaxation in the training process. Students of the horse can also learn to feel how the action of different rein attachments impact their communication with the horse. It also gives an opportunity for riders to learn to ride with 2 sets of reins before using the traditional double bridle with a snaffle and curb bit.
-
Nosebandless Bridle
The Connection Cavesson noseband is removable, enabling you to replace with a bit for a nosebandless bridle. This design allows the horse the full range of motion for their jaw and tongue, thereby unlocking the myofasical, muscular, and neural chains from the horse’s head, through the back, and down the hind legs. The horse is allowed full freedom to express themself and release tension through the TMJ and hyoid apparatus.
-
Easy Change Buckles
The Connection Cavesson is designed to meet all your head-equipment needs in one with ease of change and fit.
-
Anatomical Crown Piece
Our anatomical crown pieces are custom traced to fit the unique shape of your horse’s ears and atlas. The robust padding and shape best distributes pressure over your horse’s occiput.
-
Bitless Bridle
Buckle our reins to the side rings on the nose of the Connection Cavesson for the most direct bitless attachment to the horse’s spine for optimal biomechanics. Bitless riding is an ideal option for horses who have not completed their education to the bit on the ground, or for a rider whose hands are not educated to the bit. Bitless also enables horses with mouth pathology or trauma to be able to ride in comfort.
-
Side-Guide
The Connection Cavesson gives the rider many options for rein attachment for each horse and rider’s preferred communication style. The Side-Guide, modeled after a “sidepull” is a bitless setup with proper pull-free training in mind.
-
Padding
The Connection Cavesson features a padded noseband, crown piece, jowl strap, and noseband strap. This protects your horse’s delicate scull and the numerous sensitive nerves on it.

Padded Reins
Most reins on the market today are simply too short— they’re designed for a style of riding where “contact” is pulling, and horses lose agency over their heads and necks, and therefore their balancing apparatus, proprioception, and dignity. I’ve noticed over the years, rein lengths are getting shorter and shorter, in the catalogues and in riders’ hands.
We don’t ride like that with Equine Connection Freelance Training— Annemieke teaches riders how to artfully communicate through the reins on the ground and under saddle always through the principles of release and returning to lightness.
Our standard horse-sized reins are 5.5 feet long each, allowing your average horse to stretch their neck fully out without having to reach or lean forward.
Our oversized reins are 6 feet long.
The padded leather encourages a softly closed hand so you can balance softness, feel, and stability in your training.
Our reins contain no notches, stoppers, or grips, because we teach riders to hold their reins with grace not brace.
A variety of colors are available for main leather and padding. See Connection Cavesson above for options.
